Cost Revisions
Cost Revision Committee

This committee considers complaints about lawyers’ bills referred to the Law Society for revision. Bills are considered by a panel of two or three practitioners, at least one of whom will be experienced in the field of work to which the bill relates. The panel receives submissions from, or on behalf of, the client and the lawyer and makes a decision within a few weeks following the hearing.

The process allows for mediation as an informal means of settling a dispute. If the mediation is not successful, the parties may return to the cost revision procedure.

There are restrictions on the Society’s jurisdiction to revise bills of costs. A standing committee has been established to consider whether Council should exercise its powers to revise a bill of its own motion where a bill cannot be revised as of right.
