Ethics Committee

The Wellington District Law Society maintains a standing Ethics Committee. This is an ad hoc committee in the sense that it is only convened when there are specific matters to deal with. The numbers on the committee vary but, generally, membership consists of a convenor and between two and four members (including non-Council members).

The Committee has two principal responsibilities. It is occasionally called upon to provide advice to the Council in relation to ethical issues by the Council itself, or raised with the Council by third parties. The Committee also acts as a confidential sounding board for members of the profession in Wellington who are facing ethical issues. In this role, the convenor generally discusses matters with the practitioner and if that sort of informal discussion does not resolve the matter will discuss the matter more widely amongst Committee members.
